Virus
readiness!
It seems as if daily there is some new virus, spyware,
malware or variant trying to attack computers on the internet and
our network. We are doing everything possible to prevent your machine
from being compromised. We have all virus scan software set to update
daily and scan daily. Plus we have all Windows updates running daily
as well.
But...we still need
you to do your part. This means be proactive. If
you get a strange email, don't open it. Or if you get an attachment
you weren't expecting, delete it. You know what they say, curiosity
killed the cat. The same holds true for your computer. Curiosity
could lead to a killer virus. So when in doubt throw it out or call
tech services at 8-8969. You can also check the Alerts on the help
desk website at http://helpdesk.illinoisstate.edu/
You may also be noticing pop-ups of late for Updating
your computer. This is nothing new however there are some that won't
run automatically and require your input to complete. There are
different ones, for different things. To find out more...Click
Here. BUT
be warned DO NOT
just click away on those pop-ups...read them! Many new Spyware and
virus attackes are being made to look like a legitimate Windows
Security update.
Do you get junk mail? Of course you do, whether through the US mail or email everyone gets junk mail. But how you deal with it will determine how much or little you get. Read more...
Your data....(should
NEVER be saved to your computer hard drive...it is not backed up!!)
While we do back up the servers nightly, you
should be advised it is not an archival back-up. This means if you
delete something from your H: or P: drive, we DO
NOT keep it indefinitely. The current system keeps the
most recent (5) changes made to a file, plus the original. However
if you delete the original and don't let us no before the next scheduled
back-up, then that back-upcopy gets deleted as well.. So as we have
mentioned in the past if you need to keep something permanently,
archiving to a CD is your best choice. For help with this contact
Tech Services.
